Brad Keselowski stole a march on Jimmie Johnson in the race for the Sprint Cup following an impressive drive at the Advocare 500.

Keselowski arrived at the Phoenix International Raceway trailing Johnson by seven points.

However Keselowski came home in sixth spot, having started in 14th place, while Johnson was back in 32nd after suffering a mechanical problem.

That means Keselowski now leads the standings by 20 points, with just one race left of the season.

Johnson, a five-time champion, appeared to suffer a tyre issue with 77 laps left - with his car shooting hard into the wall, leaving the Hendrick Motorsports team to desperately try to repair the damage.

The race itself was won by Kevin Harvick, with Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Kasey Kahne and Ryan Newman rounding out the top five, but that was secondary to the drama on and off the track.

As well as the battle for the Sprint Cup, there was an incident in the pit lane after Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer collided on the last lap.
