Scott Dixon claimed victory in the Grand Prix of Sonoma as Will Power extended his lead in the race for the IndyCar Series championship.

Dixon passed Mike Conway with three laps remaining to clinch the 35th win of his IndyCar career, which ties him for fifth on the all-time list.

British driver Conway looked set to clinch a third win of the season but ran out of fuel after being passed and was eventually classified in 14th position.

New Zealander Dixon crossed the line first to win for the second time in three races, with the Target Chip Ganassi Racing coming home ahead of Ryan Hunter-Reay and Simon Pagenaud.

"It was tough. There were so many strategies going on. I didn't know who could make it and who couldn't,” Dixon said.

"I’m so excited. This is big for our team. We had a rat's year so far but today our strategy was perfect."

Power made a late, risky move on Justin Wilson for ninth place but was dropped back down to 10th in the final standings after being penalised for passing under caution.

However, he was still able to open up a 51-point lead in the overall standings as his nearest challenger, Helio Castroneves, finished in 18th position.

Just one event, the MAVTV 500 at Fontana, remains on the 2014 schedule but it offers double points, meaning Castroneves still has a realistic shot at the title.
