Jonathan Rea: 12th WSB career win in race two in Assen
Britain's Jonathan Rea registered his first victory of the season in the World Superbikes third round at Assen on Sunday.
The Honda rider finished 2.222 seconds ahead of fellow Briton Alex Lowes (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) to claim his 12th career win in race two, while Ducati's Davide Giugliano took the first race.
The first attempt to start the race had to be abandoned after just three laps due to heavy rain. The race was delayed two hours and subsequently shortened to 10 laps.
Once under way, the tricky conditions seemed to suit Rea, who made the best of the slippy track to pull away from the field after a chaotic start which saw race one winner Guintoli (Aprilia Racing) and Toni Elias (Red Devils Roma Aprilia) both fall.
Guintoli was able to re-enter the race and secure a ninth-place finish but it was Rea who was in command throughout.
Lowes made a late surge to close in on the leader on the final lap but his speed outlasted his control round a turn and Rea was able to close out the win with ease.
Sykes retains series lead
Series leader and Kawasaki rider Tom Sykes was 13.089 seconds behind Giugliano in fourth while Honda's Leon Haslam came fifth ahead of both Marco Melandri of Aprilia and Kawasaki's Loris Baz, who had started the day in pole.
Chaz Davies (Ducati), Guintoli and Niccolo Canepa (Althea Ducati) were the final three to make it into the top 10.
Sykes, who finished second in race one, leads Guintoli by 12 points in the standings with Baz a further three points back.
