Motorbike manufacturer Aprilia will return to MotoGP in 2016, 12 years after leaving it.

Roberto Colaninno, chairman of Aprilia owner Piaggio Group, confirmed the news at the Milan Bike Show.

"In 2016 Aprilia will return to MotoGP to win and match the success it had in Superbikes," Colaninno said. "We've got two years of work ahead of us."

Aprilia have had huge success in World Superbikes, winning the manufacturers' title in 2009 and 2011 and helping Max Biaggi to two world crowns.

And in the CRT category Aprilia machinery has helped Aleix Espargaro finish top in the last two seasons.

Suzuki having confirmed its return to MotoGP in 2015, so Aprilia look set to be the sixth manufacturer in the world title race.
