Irishman Eugene Laverty closed the gap on World Superbike Championship leader Sylvain Guintoli after victory in the second race of the day at Monza.

It was the Aprilia rider's third win of the year as reduced his team-mates' lead at the top of the standings to just 13 points.

Laverty looked on course for victory in the first race but had to settle for third after being overtaken by eventual winner Marco Melandri, with the BMW Motorrad rider passing Laverty and Yorkshireman Tom Sykes on the final lap.

Home favourite Melandri finished just behind Laverty in race two, clocking the fastest time on his final lap to keep the pressure on the 26-year-old from Ballymena until the very end.

Kawasaki's Sykes had an eventful day after missing out on victory in race one by just 0.085 seconds and taking third second time around which means he is now a further five points behind Laverty in the standings.

Meanwhile, Melandri's strong performance in front of a strong Italian home crowd leaves him fourth on 96 points.
