Marco Melandri: Fastest in first qualifying at Monza
Marco Melandri finished top of the timesheets in first qualifying for the third round of the Superbike World Championship at Monza.
The Italian, currently eighth in the championship standings, led the way with a lap of 1 minute 42.883 seconds on a weather-affected day at the high-speed circuit.
Britain's Jonathan Rea, who had topped the wet morning practice session, was second fastest in the dry afternoon running, three-tenths of a second down on BMW GoldBet rider Melandri.
Championship leader Sylvain Guintoli was a solid third aboard his factory Aprilia with Tom Sykes fourth for Kawasaki.
Melandri's fellow Italians Davide Giugliano and Michel Fabrizio also impressed on home soil as they claimed fifth and sixth places on their privateer Aprilias.
Eugene Laverty was seventh on the second factory Aprilia, with Kawasaki's Loris Baz next up. Leon Camier, still suffering from the nasty wound to his knee picked up at Aragon, was ninth ahead of his FIXI Crescent Suzuki team-mate Jules Cluzel.
Carlos Checa, another of the walking wounded due to a shoulder problem was 11th, while Welshman Chaz Davies was 13th, a full two seconds slower than team-mate Melandri having crashed out of the session.
