Jorge Lorenzo: Spaniard will start from the front in Qatar
Britain's Cal Crutchlow will start from second on the grid behind defending world champion Jorge Lorenzo at the MotoGP season opener in Qatar.
A new qualifying format saw the top 12 riders go head-to-head in a 15-minute shootout for pole.
Crutchlow, on a Tech 3 Yamaha, led for much of the qualifying session before factory Yamaha rider Lorenzo snatched the 52nd pole of his career with a flying lap of one minute 54.714 seconds.
"It's great to finish in pole position, especially knowing Cal was extremely fast over one lap," Lorenzo told MotoGP's official website.
"When he did a 54.9, I didn't think it would be possible to beat it, but I put in everything I could and did a very good lap.
"So we're in pole position and have a good advantage and pace for tomorrow. I hope to make a good start, just focusing on our own pace."
Honda's Dani Pedrosa, runner up to his fellow Spaniard Lorenzo in last year's world championship, was third quickest.
Moto2 champion Marc Marquez will start from sixth on his debut in the top class and nine-time champion Valentino Rossi - back with Yamaha after a difficult spell at Ducati - seventh.
