Dani Pedrosa set a new lap record to clinch pole position for the season-ending Valencia MotoGP on Saturday.

The Repsol Honda rider pipped team-mate Casey Stoner in the dying seconds of qualifying to claim his fifth pole of the season with a time of one minute, 30.844 seconds.

Fellow Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo then produced a late flying lap to demote Stoner to third place and ensure the top three riders locked out the front row.

Lorenzo will be looking to put the finishing touches on his championship-winning season after he secured the title when Pedrosa crashed in Australia last time out.

Stoner claimed home honours at Phillip Island and the Australian will be desperate to secure back-to-back wins to end his career with a flourish as he hangs up his helmet at the end of the season.

Briton's Cal Crutchlow took fourth place on the grid with LCR Honda rider Stefan Bradl separating him from Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team-mate Andrea Dovizioso on the second row.
