Shane Byrne won the opening MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship race of the weekend to extend his overall lead.

Alex Lowes crashed out unhurt on his WFR Honda, leaving Tommy Hill and Josh Brookes to seize the remaining podium places with two races left on Sunday.

Byrne seized the initiative early in proceedings - leaving Lowes and Michael Laverty in behind to trade second and third places on the opening two laps.

An error on lap 11 from Laverty promoted Hill and Brookes to third and fourth respectively, and the pair soon moved past Stuart Easton before Lowes' crash at Clearways saw the race red-flagged.

That left Byrne clear to cruise to victory, with James Westmoreland back in fourth ahead of Barry Burrell and Tommy Bridewell, who finished seventh despite his finger injury.
