Alex Lowes set a scintillating lap in qualifying at Silverstone to claim his third pole position of the British Superbike season.

The WFR Honda rider, one of the six contenders in the 'Showdown' phase of the season, has looked confident all weekend at the Northamptonshire circuit.

After much jostling for superiority in Q1 and 2, Lowes went straight out and posted the fastest lap of the event in Q3, his two minutes 05.662seconds too good for Tommy Hill on his Swan Yamaha in second.

A resurgent Michael Laverty (Samsung Honda) was third while Josh Brookes's Tyco Suzuki completed the front row after Shane Byrne just missed out in fifth.

Chris Walker, James Westmoreland and Barry Burrell made up row two, Peter Hickman was ninth and Danny Buchan will start 10th on the MSS Bathams Kawasaki despite being unable to return to the track in final qualifying.

"That was a pretty good lap. I had felt pretty quick all of the way across the weekend and the bike is feeling good, so we will see what happens now in the races," Lowes said.

"I am going to enjoy them and I really want podium finishes tomorrow."
