James Westmoreland finished at the head of the field following the second practice session of the British Superbike Championship at Donington.

The Team WFR Honda rider needs a positive result in the races to contend for the title and finishing fastest on Friday with a best lap time of one minute 30.346 seconds will have helped his confidence.

The race weekend is the last of the main season, with the top six riders in the championship after the meeting at Donington then competing in the three-race Showdown series at Assen, the Silverstone Arena and Brands Hatch.

Second

Westmoreland, 24, beat Michael Laverty into second place by just 0.017secs with Josh Brookes and Alex Lowes the next names on the timesheets. The trio finishing behind Westmoreland in second practice are all set to secure Showdown slots.

Brookes was the quickest rider in the day's first practice despite Lowes dominating the entire session.

Lowes, who is the final rider occupying the six Showdown spots, was leading until the closing three minutes when Brookes beat his time by just 0.007secs.

Laverty added his second place in the second session to a third-placed finish earlier in the day.
