Davide Giugliano led the way in a rain-affected first qualifying for round nine of the World Superbike Championship in Brno.

The Althea Racing rider is just ninth in the standings but his time of one minute 59.452 seconds was enough to head the timesheets in the Czech Republic.

BMW's Marco Melandri, who sits second in the championship, was the next fastest man with the improving Eugene Laverty third for Aprilia Racing.

Tom Sykes finished fourth for Kawasaki, meaning four different manufacturers occupied the top four places.

Laverty's team-mate and world championship leader Max Biaggi was down in 14th place.

Rain began to fall heavily towards the end of the session and showers are expected to continue throughout the weekend.
