Shane Byrne recovered from a first-race crash in the Dutch round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship at Assen to take a dramatic victory in the second.

Byrne, riding the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki, crashed out while third on the penultimate lap of the wet opening race, which was won by Australian Josh Waters aboard the Tyco Suzuki.

Ryuichi Kiyonari finished second in that race, having powered his Buildbase BMW into an early lead in the second and then almost fought off the challenge of the hard-riding Byrne, who finally found a way through at the last corner of the final lap to take victory by 0.152 seconds.

Byrne, bidding to take the title for a record fourth time, holds a 12-point lead over Kiyonari going into next month's penultimate round at Silverstone.
