Shane Byrne: Pole position at Oulton Park
Shane Byrne will start from pole position in the second round of the British Superbike Championship at Oulton Park on Monday.
The Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider, who leads the overall standings after winning both races at the opening round at Brands Hatch, produced an impressive performance in qualifying at the Cheshire circuit.
Byrne lapped the 2.692-mile circuit in a new track record time of one minute, 34.557 seconds after initially breaking the old mark, which was set by Ryuichi Kiyonari in 2006, in free practice.
The Londoner was 0.327 seconds quicker than Australian Josh Brookes on the Milwaukee Yamaha.
James Ellison (Lloyds British GBmoto Racing Kawasaki) was third fastest, followed by fellow Britons Stuart Easton (Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki), Dan Linfoot (Quattro Plant Kawasaki) and Tommy Bridewell (Milwaukee Yamaha), with Kiyonari (Buildbase BMW) seventh quickest.
Byrne told www.britishsuperbike.com: "To be honest with you I didn't know what would be possible today in terms of lap times but I am happy to be back on pole.
"I did a 1m34.9s lap on a used tyre after the first run, so I was hopeful that we had a bit of pace in us for the final session, but it was pretty tight when that time popped up!
"I think we have done our homework here this weekend and fingers crossed we can have a good result in the races on Monday."
