Josh Brookes crashed three times in the rain-soaked conditions at Brands Hatch but still claimed a pole start for the Easter Monday opening-round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship.

The Aussie, making his race debut with the Milwaukee Yamaha, crashed twice in the early stages, but powered back and then clocked a lap in 55.093secs to head off former three times title winner Ryuichi Kiyonari.

But moments after putting in his pole time, Brookes high-sided off without injury.

He had done enough to secure the 20th pole start of his BSB career, though. American rider John Hopkins completes the front row of the grid on his Tyco Suzuki.

Local favourite Shane Byrne, chasing a record fourth title, faces an uphill struggle having tipped off his Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki leaving him with a fifth-row start.
