Defending IndyCar champion Ryan Hunter-Reay converted his pole position into a first victory at Barber Park to claim the Honda GP of Alabama.

Hunter-Reay had already ended Penske Racing's domination of pole position at Barber Motorsports Park, and he also ended their run of race wins by coming home in front.

The defending IndyCar Series champion held off New Zealand's Scott Dixon to claim victory - ending the run of the three previous races being won by Penske drivers Helio Castroneves of Brazil and Australia's Will Power.

"I was dragging my tail off trying to hold off Dixon," Hunter-Reay said.

Dixon finished second for a remarkable fourth straight time on the Alabama road course, with Castroneves third, Charlie Kimball and Power back in fifth.

It was a first win of the season for Hunter-Reay and an big leap in performance at Alabama after only finishing 12th in his previous best result at the track.

Team owner Michael Andretti was delighted with the victory for Hunter-Reay, after also winning an earlier Indy Light race on Sunday with Carlos Munoz.

"It was great to get that win with Carlos this morning and for Ryan to come back, they did a great job with strategy," Andretti said. "Just a perfect weekend, when you start on the pole and lead almost all the laps, it's just how to do it."

AJ Allmendinger dropped out to finish 19th in his IndyCar debut after stalling his car at the last pit stop, while James Hinchcliffe, winner of the opening race of the season, finished last after his car was damaged in an early collision.
