Kasey Kahne starts from pole position for Sunday's Price Chopper 400, the third race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, at Kansas Speedway.

Kahne lapped the 1.5-mile oval in 30.920 seconds (174.644 mph) in the No. 9 Ford to claim his third pole of the season and the 19th of his career.

Richard Petty Motorsports team-mate Paul Menard starts second after recording an average speed of 174.469 mph as Chase drivers struggled to make the top 10.

Jeff Gordon was the fastest of their number, qualifying third on the grid. Greg Biffle starts fifth, with Matt Kenseth eighth and Kurt Busch ninth.

Points leader Denny Hamlin will start 12th while four-time defending Cup champion Jimmie Johnson - currently second in the standings - qualified 21st.
