Peter Kennaugh extended his overall lead on stage six of the Tour of Austria as Evgeni Petrov claimed a solo victory.

Team Sky rider Kennaugh went into the final mountain stage with a 29-second advantage and the 25-year-old stretched that to 1min 2sec.

The fireworks came on the final climb to Villach-Dobratsch and it was Petrov (Tinkoff-Saxo) who dropped his fellow breakaway riders to claim his first win of the season.

Despite heavy rain, Kennaugh looked comfortable as he battled his way over three category-one climbs to take third on the stage.

He will now look to defend his advantage on Saturday's time trial and Sunday's race-ending sprint stage.
