London 2012 gold medallist Heather Stanning has been pulled out of next month's European Championships after showing signs of fatigue in training.

The 29-year-old won Team GB's first gold medal of London 2012 in the 2,000 metres women's pairs with Helen Glover.

She returned to training in November after a year spent on active duty with the British Army and teamed up once again with Glover to win the GB Rowing Team Senior Trials.

But she has struggled in recent weeks and as a result the GB Rowing Team have withdrawn her from the selection process for the tournament in Belgrade.

Sir David Tanner, GB Rowing Team Performance Director, said: "We have decided to take the pressure off, knock back her training and we think that will open the opportunity for a swift return to top form."

Stanning said: "I am clearly disappointed not to be travelling with the team to Belgrade for the Europeans and I wish everyone luck out there. I am still training and will focus on the programme I've been set to regain intensity."

The British team are due to announce their selection for the tournament, which runs from May 30 to June 1, on Wednesday.
