Nathan MacKinnon celebrates Thursday's match winner with scorer Andre Benoit
Nathan MacKinnon broke one of Wayne Gretzky's old records with a point in his 13th straight game during Colorado's 3-2 overtime win against Detroit.
MacKinnon moved to the 50 point mark for his rookie season with an assist on Andre Benoit's match-winning goal in the final minute of overtime.
That was enough to surpass Gretzky's 12-game point streak as an 18-year-old, although he has some way to go to better the legend's rookie season, which ended with 51 goals and 137 points.
Benoit's goal put the Avalanche in front for the first time on the night and denied the Red Wings victory on a night they celebrated retiring Nicklas Lidstrom's No 5 jersey.
Dallas stars forward Tyler Seguin produced the individual performance of the night with three goals and two assists in a 6-1 demolition of the Vancouver Canucks.
Seguin moved to 28 goals and 63 points on the season in a one-sided clash that saw Canucks remove goalie Eddie Lack after giving up five goals on 17 shots - they traded away No 1 netminder Roberto Luongo earlier in the week.
There was also a 6-1 win for the Chicago Blackhawks with Jonathan Toews and Andrew Shaw scoring twice in their thrashing of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Tuukka Rask secured his sixth shutout of the season as the Boston Bruins blanked the Washington Capitals 3-0, their goals coming from Gregory Campbell, Loui Eriksson and Brad Marchand.
Taylor Hall's 21st goal of the season was enough to see the Edmonton Oilers past the New York Islanders 3-2 in overtime, the visitors failing to hold on to a 2-0 lead they earned in the opening 20 minutes.
And there was a huge rally from the San Jose Sharks in their 5-3 win over Pittsburgh, the Penguins giving up four goals in the final period, two of them to defenseman Brent Burns.
The Los Angeles Kings extended their win streak to six games with a 3-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets and there was no dream return for Steven Stamkos, back after a broken leg, as the Tampa Bay Lightning were beaten 3-1 by the Buffalo Sabres.
Former Sabres goalie Ryan Miller improved to 3-0 with the St Louis Blues as they edged the Nashville Predators 2-1 and there were two goals for Radim Vrbata in a 5-2 win for the Phoenix Coyotes over the Montreal Canadiens.
