Matt Holliday collected his 1,000th career RBI as the St Louis Cardinals opened their series against the New York Mets with a 6-2 victory at Busch Stadium.

The 34-year-old left fielder was treated to a standing ovation when following up Jon Jay's double in the four-run fifth inning with a single up the middle to reach a significant milestone in his 11-year career in the Majors.

And the hits kept coming as Allen Craig doubled to score Holliday, with Matt Adams then tripling to score Craig.

Rubby De La Rosa, meanwhile, allowed just one hit and retired the last 13 batters he faced as the Boston Red Sox clinched a 1-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

AJ Pierzynski's sacrifice fly in the fifth produced the single winning run.

The Los Angeles Angels suffered a fourth defeat in five games as Trevor Bauer led the Cleveland Indians to a 4-3 win at Progressive Field while Omar Infante drove in four against his former club as the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 11-8.

Pinch-hitting

Jerry Sands led the Tampa Bay Rays to their first victory over the Baltimore Orioles in six attempts this season.

Yunel Escobar and Ryan Hanigan also homered at Tropicana Field but it was Sands, pinch-hitting in a tie game in the eighth, whose first homer of the season won the day for the Rays.

Five runs in the 13th saw the Philadelphia Phillies emerge 6-1 victors over the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field, Travis Wood delivered an RBI double with two outs in the 13th to lift the Chicago Cubs to a 5-4 win against the Miami Marlins and, at Chase Field, the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-3.

Elsewhere, the Seattle Mariners beat the San Diego Padres 5-1, the Los Angeles Dodgers downed the Colorado Rockies 6-1 and the Texas Rangers saw off the challenge of the Oakland Athletics to triumph 14-8 at O.co Coliseum.
