Adam Wainwright registered his National League-leading ninth victory with seven shut-out innings as St Louis Cardinals edged Tampa Bay Rays 1-0 at Tropicana Field.

Matt Holliday connected for his fourth homer of the season - a long drive to left centre with two outs in the sixth - to ensure the first of a two-game Interleague series went the visitors' way and inflicted a fourth straight loss on the Rays, who have not scored a run in their last three games.

Taylor Teagarden hit a grand slam on debut as New York Mets snapped a six-game skid with a 6-2 triumph over Milwaukee Brewers at Citi Field.

Teagarden, promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas over the weekend in place of demoted catcher Travis d'Arnaud, connected off Brewers starter Marco Estrada in the sixth inning for his second career slam.

Brandon Workman tossed 6 2/3 shutout innings and Mike Napoli hit a two-out, RBI single in the top of the third inning to lift Boston Red Sox to a 1-0 success against Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.

Jacoby Ellsbury struck the go-ahead single off Charlie Furbush in the eighth inning to propel New York Yankees to a 3-2 triumph over Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.

Bronson Arroyo gave up six hits and one run over seven innings as Arizona Diamondbacks beat Houston Astros 4-1 at Chase Field, while Eric Hosmer, Alex Gordon and MIke Moustakas all went deep as Kansas City Royals toppled Cleveland Indians 9-5.

Interleague success

Anthony Rizzo had three hits, including a two-run homer and an RBI double, as Chicago Cubs overcame Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3, and Miami Marlins secured a record-equalling 13th consecutive interleague triumph with an 8-5 success at Texas Rangers.

Kevin Correia pitched six-plus scoreless innings for Minnesota Twins as they defeated Toronto 4-0, condemning the Blue Jays to a third shutout loss in four games, and Andrelton Simmons' grand slam helped Atlanta Braves get past Colorado Rockies 13-10.

Elsewhere, Oakland Athletics lost 2-1 at Los Angeles Angels after 14 innings, Los Angeles Dodgers were 6-1 winners at Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals squeezed past San Francisco Giants 2-1.

Philadelphia Phillies saw off San Diego Padres 5-2 and Detroit Tigers' game against the White Sox was postponed due to rain in Chicago.
