Masahiro Tanaka maintained his perfect record for the New York Yankees as he threw his first career shut-out in a 4-0 win over the New York Mets.

The Japanese import struck out eight without allowing a single walk and is now 6-0 in his first season in the MLB.

Yangervis Solarte and Mark Teixeira both homered for the Yankees, who joined the Boston Red Sox in moving to within half a game of the Baltimore Orioles at the top of the American League East.

The Orioles slumped to a fourth straight loss as the Detroit Tigers won 7-5 to complete a three-game sweep.

Detroit had jumped into a 6-0 lead on a night when backup catcher Bryan Holaday scored twice and drove in another run, and although Baltimore answered with five runs in the fifth inning, the Tigers hung on for a win that moves them to 24-12 at the top of the AL Central.

The Red Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 9-4, with their night highlighted by two homers from David Ortiz, who is now third on Boston's all-time home run list with 384.

Keeping pace

The Kansas City Royals, five and a half games back on Detroit, kept pace with a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies, with Mike Moustakas driving in all their runs with a base-clearing double in the second.

The Los Angeles Angels beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 behind seven outstanding innings from Garrett Richards to trim the Oakland Athletics' lead at the top of the AL West to three games after they lost 4-2 to the Chicago White Sox.

The Cleveland Indians piled up 22 hits in a 15-4 rout of the Toronto Blue Jays, while the Tampa Bay Rays needed just three to earn a 2-0 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Matt Dominguez hit a walk-off single in the ninth as the Houston Astros came from 4-0 down to beat the Texas Rangers 5-4.

In the National League, Anthony DeSclafani stepped in for the injured Jose Fernandez and won his major league debut as the Miami Marlins pounded the Los Angeles Dodgers 13-3, closing to within two games of the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.

The Braves lost 10-4 to the San Francisco Giants on an off-night for pitcher Julio Teheran, with the Washington Nationals one and a half games back after beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1.

The Pittsburgh Pirates touched up Milwaukee closer Francisco Rodriguez for three runs in a 4-1 win over the Brewers, while the games between St Louis and the Chicago Cubs, and San Diego and Cincinnati, were rained out.
