Ruebyn Richards and Andrew Deer both claimed bronze medals for Britain at the European Taekwondo Championship on the last day of competition in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Nottingham-born Richards (-68kg) and Tamworth's Deer (-74kg) were both denied title shots by Russian opposition in their respective semi-finals.

Richards suffered an agonising defeat to second seed Alexey Denisenko after their contest went to golden-point overtime and, with no further scoring, Denisenko was awarded a place in the final on the referees' call.

"I can't be disappointed with a medal, but to lose the way I did, with it being so close, is so frustrating," the 21-year-old said.

"I fought so well all day, but I could have done more and it would have been me in the final."

Deer fell behind in his semi-final against Albert Gaun and was unable to claw back the deficit as he lost 7-4 to the 2013 World Championship silver medallist.

"I've felt strong and sharp all through the year and I brought that to the event," the 26-year-old said. "Gaun is a great performer who has won major medals.

"It was always going to be a tough fight and I went in with a plan that worked well for rounds one and two. But a lapse in concentration in the third round cost me."

The two bronzes take Britain's medal tally to seven in Baku and follow on from Aaron Cook's gold and Jade Jones' silver on Saturday.
