Jade Jones had to settle for a silver medal at the European Taekwondo Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Jones, who won Britain's first Olympic gold medal in the sport at London 2012, looked to be in strong form heading into the -57kg final against Spain's Eva Calva Gomez.

She continued that to take a 9-6 lead midway through the final round, but Calva Gomez hit back with a head shot and scored five unanswered points in an 11-9 victory.

"I'm gutted with just the silver but at least I'm picking up ranking points," she said.

"I managed to get ahead a couple of times with good head shots. But I made a mistake at the end and she got me back.

"I had a good day but it was a tough, draining event. The focus now is on the World Grand Prix series and protecting my number one ranking."

In the men's -80kg final there was victory for former Great Britain fighter Aaron Cook, who has been representing the Isle of Man since being overlooked for London 2012.

His final victory was all the sweeter as it came against Britain's Damon Sansum, via a golden point after Sansum had forced overtime with a last-second punch.

Sansum was disappointed to be beaten in the end, but he beat world champion Tahir Guelec en route to the final and is looking forward to putting his name in the frame for the Olympics in Rio in 2016.

"I thought it was going to be my day," he said.

"I performed as well as I think I ever have, with 12-point finishes in three of my five fights and beating the world champion on the way. I felt nobody could deal with me in the ring.

"I'm not really that happy with silver but my goal is gold at the Olympics, not at the Euros. I'm on target and I know I can be the best."
