Curtis Granderson: Mobbed by teammates after turning jeers to cheers as New York Mets edged Atlanta Braves
Mets newcomer Curtis Granderson hit a sacrifice fly in the 14th inning to help New York squeeze a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field on Sunday.David Wright had four hits and New York took advantage of three early errors by Atlanta to prevent a third successive defeat and the Braves run, which had seen them win seven of eight.
Granderson, who was jeered all afternoon as his slump continues, before lifting into medium left field as Kirk Niewwenhuis slid home ahead of Justin Upton’s throw to steal a late win.
The Milwaukee Brewers also needed 14 innings to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2, with Khris Davis delivering the biggest hit in a game interrupted by a punch-filled brawl when he homered in the last.
Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez, Pirates outfielder Travis Snider and Milwaukee bench coach Jerry Narron were ejected following a third-inning fracas as Milwaukee claimed a crucial comeback win.
Problems started when Gomez paused at the plate and flipped his bat after hitting a two-out triple.
In Washington, the Nationals edged St Louis Cardinals 3-2 after Denard Span hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth with the bases loaded.
The Reds had an 8-2 win over the Cubs in Chicago, the Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks 4-1, the Giants beat the Padres 4-3 and Jimmy Rollins helped the Phillies to a 10-9 win over the Rockies when he homered early and then hit a go-ahead single in the eighth inning.
In the American League, Jose Abreu and Jordan Danks each had two-run homers, as the Chicago White Sox ended a four-game losing streak with a 16-2 win over the Texas Rangers.
The New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 when Dean Anna drew a bases-loaded walk on a full-count pitch with two outs in the 12th inning and Carlos Beltran followed with a two-run single.
At Oakland, Josh Donaldson homered and doubled twice as the Athletics beat Houston Astros 4-1 to complete a series sweep.
Elsewhere, the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 8-3, the Detroit Tigers edged the Los Angeles Angels 2-1 and the Cleveland Indians beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4.
Miami Marlins completed a three-game sweep of their interleague series against the Seattle Mariners, with Adeiny Hechavarria hitting a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth.
