Amanda Lightfoot becomes the second British woman to qualify for the Winter Olympics

Biathlon duo Lee Jackson and Amanda Lightfoot have been selected to represent Great Britain at next month's Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Jackson, 33, will compete at his second successive Winter Games while Lightfoot is only the second British woman to qualify after Emma Fowler in Turin in 2006.

Lightfoot said: "When it was announced that I had been selected for Team GB for Sochi, I was overwhelmed with tears and laughter combined.

"It has been a worthwhile journey to get to this point in my sporting career and I will enjoy every minute of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics."

Jackson and Lightfoot, who are both members of the armed forces, will each compete in the Sprint and Individual competitions.

Their results in the sprint will determine whether they qualify for their respective Pursuit races.

The selection of Jackson and Lightfoot takes the number of British athletes so far confirmed for Sochi to 23 after previous selections were ratified for the curling, figure skating and short-track teams.

Team GB's Chef de Mission for Sochi Mike Hay said: "I am particularly pleased to welcome Amanda Lightfoot and Lee Jackson to the team as Team GB has an impressive track record of competing in biathlon at every Olympic Winter Games since the sport was introduced in Squaw Valley in 1960.

"Lightfoot now also enters the history books as only the second female ever to compete for Team GB. I wish them both the best of luck at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games."

Great Britain has never won a medal in biathlon with its previous best performance a 12th place finish from Mike Dixon in the 20kilometre Individual in Albertville in 1992.
