Lindsey Vonn completed a successful return to skiing this weekend as Lara Gut won the World Cup super-G in Lake Louise.

The American finished fifth, improving on her downhill finishes of 40th and 11th over the past two days at the Alberta resort.

"I'm so happy," she said. "Every day it got better. For sure I made some mistakes. But I'm like in top level.

"I'm so very happy about this weekend. I'm sure I can win. I have to take more risks at the top. I need to ski more. In my head I know I can do it, it's just a question of time."

Gut, 22, has won four of the eight races this season, confirming the potential she showed in claiming two medals at the 2009 world championships in Val d'Isere.

She pipped Tina Weirather by 0.03secs with Austrian Anna Fenninger in third a futher 0.30sec behind.

Gut leads Maria Hoefl-Riesch in the overall standings after the German's disappointing super-G where she made a big mistake two-thirds of the way down.
