Alice McKennis was a surprise winner of the World Cup downhill event that marked the return of Lindsey Vonn in St Anton.

The American set a time of one minute 14.62 seconds on the technical Karl Schranz course and it proved enough for a maiden win.

She finished just 0.07secs ahead of Italian Daniela Merighetti with Austrian Anna Fenninger taking third at 0.16secs.

Vonn, making her comeback after a debilitating stomach problem ruled her out for much of the past month, looked rusty as she came home in sixth place.

In missing six events, Vonn has made it difficult to retain the overall points title, particularly with Slovenian Tina Maze - fourth today - in such good form.

The American has only 454 points, some 735 behind runaway leader Maze.
