Team USA made a solid start in their quest to regain the Mosconi Cup by opening up a 3-2 lead after the first day at York Hall, Bethnal Green.

Niels Feijen 5-0 Mike Dechaine
Appleton & Ekonomopoulos 4-5 Hatch & Van Boening

'The Scorpion' Johnny Archer, competitng in his 16th Mosconi Cup, then joined forces with debutant Brandon Shuff to extend USA's lead to 2-0.

Archer and Shuff produced an inspired comeback to fight back from 4-1 down and defeat Chris Melling and Nick van den Berg 5-4 in their scotch doubles rack.

Experienced Dutchman Feijen hit back for Europe with a 5-0 singles whitewash of Dechaine, however USA ensured they would end the opening day in front when Shane van Boening and Dennis Hatch edged an entertaining rack 5-4 against Appleton and Europe's Greek rookie Nikos Ekonomopoulos.
