A powerboat driver has died following an incident during a race at Weymouth on Sunday. Mike Lovell's boat rolled over during the P1 SuperStock national championship series race. Both Lovell, from Southampton, and navigator Dan Whapples were thrown clear of the boat before being brought to shore and airlifted to hospital. However, on Monday morning it was announced Lovell had died in hospital. A statement issued by race organisers read: "Mike Lovell and Dan Whapples both sustained serious injuries and were air-lifted to Southampton General Hospital.

Report

"Overnight Mike Lovell sadly succumbed to his injuries. Dan Whapples is in a serious but stable condition. A further statement will be issued when more details are available. "Our thoughts are with the whole powerboat community and particularly with Mike and Dan's family and friends." Portland Coastguard, who attended the scene, has made a report to the Marine Accident Investigation Branch. Lovell was driving for the Peters and May team, who currently lie fifth of the eight teams in the series standings.
