Mauro Gomez and Pedro Ciriaco were the unlikely heroes for Boston on Saturday night as the Red Sox secured a split of their day-night double-header against the American League East-leading New York Yankees with a 9-5 win at Fenway Park.
The pair, summoned from Triple-A affiliate team Pawtucket earlier this week due to injuries, combined for four runs, seven hits and five RBI to help the Red Sox snap their five-game skid.
New York had earlier strolled to a comfortable triumph in the afternoon match-up, Andruw Jones smashing two of the Yankees' four homers in a 6-1 success.
The AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox stretched their winning run to five games with a 2-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, while Prince Fielder and Delmon Young each had two-run homers in the Detroit Tigers' 8-7 win against the Kansas City Royals.
In other AL games, the Seattle Mariners toppled the Oakland Athletics 7-1, the Cleveland Indians overcame the Tampa Bay Rays 7-3, the Texas Rangers edged the Minnesota Twins 4-3 in 10 innings and the Los Angeles Angels saw off the Baltimore Orioles 3-0.
The National League East-leading Washington Nationals picked up their fifth win in six games by beat the Colorado Rockies 4-1, Gio Gonzalez throwing six solid innings and Ryan Zimmerman driving in the go-ahead run in the sixth James McDonald struck out 10 and gave up one run in seven innings to lift the NL Central-leading Pittsburgh Pirates to a 3-1 win against the San Francisco Giants.
JD Martinez and Jose Altuve each had three hits as the Houston Astros ended their nine-game losing streak with a 6-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Tony Cruz blasted a go-ahead two-run triple and Kyle Lohse pitched seven strong innings for St Louis as the Cardinals edged Miami 3-2 to snap the Marlins' three-game winning run.
Finally, the New York Mets defeated the Chicago Cubs 3-1, the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3, the Arizona Diamondbacks were 5-3 winners against the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds prevailed 6-5 against the San Diego Padres.
