The Tampa Bay Rays held on for a 9-8 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in an entertaining encounter between the American League East's top two teams on Sunday.
Ben Zobrist and Elliot Johnson hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth to put Tampa Bay out of Baltimore's reach as the Rays snapped a three-game skid.
Justin Verlander restricted Oakland to one run over seven innings and Miguel Cabrera hit a pair of RBI singles for Detroit as the Tigers toppled the Athletics 3-1.
Seattle avoided a three-game sweep against New York by recording a 6-2 success at Yankee Stadium, Kevin Millwood pitching seven strong innings for the Mariners to spoil Andy Pettitte's Yankees return.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia posted a two-run homer in the seventh inning as the Boston Red Sox trounced the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians 12-1 at Fenway Park.
Elsewhere in the American League, Nelson Cruz's tie-breaking grand slam in the third lifted the Texas Rangers to a 13-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, the Kansas City Royals thrashed the Chicago White Sox 9-1 and the Minnesota Twins edged the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3.
In the National League, Joey Votto hit three home runs - including a game-ending grand slam - as the Cincinnati Reds overcame the Washington Nationals 9-6.
Giancarlo Stanton also hit a walk-off grand slam in the Miami Marlins' 8-4 triumph against the New York Mets.
The Philadelphia Phillies saw off San Diego 3-2, Cole Hamels limiting the Padres to one run and five hits in seven innings, while Ian Stewart struck the go-ahead run in the seventh as the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-2 and the San Francisco Giants won 7-3 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Finally, the Atlanta Braves defeated St Louis 7-4 to seal a three-game sweep against the Cardinals, Josh Harrison's walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th earned the Pittsburgh Pirates a 3-2 victory over the Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers completed a three-game sweep against Colorado with an 11-5 win over the Rockies.
