Highlights of Team Northumbria's 52-50 victory over the Yorkshire Jets
Team Northumbria snatched a dramatic 52-50 win over York Jets after a see-saw encounter on Monday night.
The contest swung back and forth throughout before a thrilling finish saw both sides locked together deep into the fourth quarter, but it was the visitors who got ahead in the dying stages and held on to secure their second victory in three days.
Having been thrashed 66-44 on their home patch by the Surrey Storm over the weekend, the Jets looked determined to make a fast start and did just that as Joanne Walker quickly found her range to fire them into an early 4-0 lead.
That soon became a 12-4 advantage and Northumbria were grateful for a timeout that helped change the momentum of the game as Noleen Lennon and Oonagh McCulloch chipped in to reduce the deficit to 16-10 by the end of the opening quarter.
A brilliant grab from a rebound and shot on the move from Walker put the Jets 21-16 up, but Northumbria would go on to dominate the second quarter from that point.
Creating by far the more shooting opportunities, they turned the game on its head and it was McCulloch - shooting well from range - that got the last goal of the half to move them 28-23 ahead.
The action was unrelenting in the third as the Jets this time battled their way back into things with Nathalie Haythornthwaite making a real difference after coming on as Goal Attack.
"We were delighted to get the win in the dying minutes there and it builds on from the match on Saturday - it's been a great weekend altogether."
Another successful shot from Walker put them 40-38 up, but Lennon would ensure the visitors finished the quarter just one behind as she put in a penalty shot on the whistle.
It remained nip-and-tuck throughout an enthralling final session, but when Lennon put Northumbria 49-48 ahead with just under three minutes left it proved decisive as they kept their noses in front to seal victory.
McCulloch, who was named player of the match, told Sky Sports: "We were delighted to get the win in the dying minutes there and it builds on from the match on Saturday - it's been a great weekend altogether.
"It was a very physical contest, but we battled well throughout the match."
Elsewhere on Monday night, Manchester Thunder beat Hertfordshire Mavericks 48-38, Celtic Dragons thrashed Loughborough Lightning 61-41, while Surrey Storm and Team Bath played out a 48-48 draw.
