Robert Thornton claimed his first title of the year with a 6-5 victory over Ian White in Sunday's Players Championship 6 at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan.

The Scot found himself 4-2 and 5-4 down to the Stoke ace and survived match darts in the 10th leg of the final before triumphing in the decider.

Thornton began his run to the title with a 6-3 win over David Pallett before recording a brace of 6-1 wins over Aden Kirk and Wayne Jones to claim his place in the last 16.

The Premier League star then knocked out Andy Parsons 6-3 before edging out Richie Burnett 6-5 in a tight quarter-final encounter.

Thornton faced Phil Taylor in the semi-finals and claimed a 6-4 victory, while White saw off Kyle Anderson 6-1 in the last four after defeating Vincent van der Voort by the same score in the quarter-finals.

Excellent

Saturday's Players Championship 5 at the same venue was won by Brendan Dolan who whitewashed Michael Smith 6-0 in the final.

The Northern Irish ace secured his fourth ProTour title in six months after earlier victories over Ricky Evans, Christian Kist, Joey Ten Berge, Kevin Voornhout, Dean Winstanley and James Hubbard.

Reigning world youth champion Smith defeated five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld 6-3 in the quarter-finals with the aid of four maximums.

That excellent win saw Smith face his manager and mentor, Gary Anderson, in the last four - and he overcame the Scotsman with a 6-4 win before running out of steam against Dolan in the decider.

Former world youth champion Hubbard enjoyed his best result to date on the ProTour circuit with an excellent run to the semi-finals.

Hubbard's fine day included a stunning 6-0 win over Wes Newton in the second round before he took a fantastic 6-4 win over world champion Michael van Gerwen in the fourth round.
