Martin Kaymer is hoping Europe’s Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley will consider naming 56-year-old Bernhard Langer as one of his three wild card selections.

Former captains Colin Montgomerie and Tony Jacklin have already suggested Langer should be kept in mind for September’s match against the United States at Gleneagles.

And if Langer is chosen by McGinley he would become the oldest participant in the competition, beating the record of American Ray Floyd who was 51 when he competed at the Belfry in 1993.

Floyd won three of his four matches that week – including a singles victory over Jose Maria Olazabal – and Langer has recently admitted he would love to make his 11th Ryder Cup appearance as a player.

Talk of Langer teeing-up in Perthshire followed the German’s remarkable 13-shot triumph in the Senior Open Championship last weekend.

And fellow-German Kaymer, winner of this year’s US Open, is the latest professional to put forward Langer as a candidate for the 12-strong team.

"I hope Paul was watching what Bernhard did in the Senior Open," he said.

"Shooting 18-under-par for four rounds at a difficult links course like Porthcawl is an outstanding effort under any circumstances whether it is a senior tournament or a regular tour event.

"And don't forget what Bernhard did by finishing eighth in this year's Masters at Augusta."

Supportive

As for his own personal view of his compatriot, Kaymer said: "Bernhard is a special player and it would be great to be able to partner him.

"He has done so much for German golf and for European golf and he would not let the team down if Paul picked him to play against the Americans.

"Bernhard and I have a good relationship. We regularly exchange text messages and phone calls and he has always been so supportive of me throughout my career."

Langer, who turns 57 in August, has won two senior majors this year.

The three-day match, which starts on September 26, will be broadcast on the dedicated Sky Sports Ryder Cup channel.
