Alejandro Canizares completed a routine victory in the Trophy Hassan II in Morocco, eventually winning by five shots.

In what amounted to a lap of honour, the Spaniard came under little pressure from his rivals after starting out with a six-shot cushion, his two-under 70 more than enough to clinch a second European Tour success.

Canizares did bogey the second but got that shot back at the fifth when pitching to three feet and his approach to the ninth went even closer to set up another birdie.

Final leaderboard

GB&Ire unless stated:

-19 A Canizares (Spa)
-14 A Sullivan
-12 S Benson
-12 M Carlsson (Swe)
-11 R Cabrera-Bello (Spa)
-11 W Ormsby (Aus)
-11 R Bland

Collated scores

Closest pursuer and playing partner Seve Benson failed to gain any momentum after opening with seven pars and was soon joined by Sweden's Magnus A Carlsson.

But Canizares showed no sign of coming back to the field, picking up further shots at the 10th and 12th although another at the 15th was cancelled out by a bogey at the next.

England's Andy Sullivan burst out of the pack with a stunning back nine of 29, closing with four successive birdies, to card 63 and reach 14 under par in the clubhouse while Carlsson's challenge floundered with a bogey-six at the 15th.

It was left to Canizares to complete the formalities, a sixth birdie of the day taking him to 21-under before a piece of bad luck at the last forced him to make double bogey after his ball came to rest next to an un-replaced divot.

Focused

"It's been a long time since the last one and felt like it was never coming," Canizares, whose only previous victory came in the 2006 Russian Open, told Sky Sports.

"This week I played great, some of the best golf of my career. I hit good shots after good shots, kept the focus and it's a pity it ended like that but who cares.

"It's a special moment and I can't wait to get back home and celebrate with the family.

"Hopefully this is a step towards a little bit of improvement in my career I have some stuff to work on but hopefully I improve little by little to get to a point where I can play golf as natural as I did this week.

Sullivan claimed second place two strokes clear of Carlsson and Benson, with Spain's Rafael Cabrera-Bello, Wade Ormsby of Australia and England's Richard Bland a further shot back.

"It's just unbelievable," said Sullivan, who turned professional shortly after helping Great Britain and Ireland win the 2011 Walker Cup. "I got off to such a good start on the back nine and I managed to keep it going.

"The wind was getting up and there were a few holes into the wind, but that finish was surreal. The putts weren't too bad, they were within 10 feet. I didn't hole any bombs.

"I just played great today, I hit the irons really good which I've been struggling with all week. I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd be hitting 63 on the last day, that's for sure.
