Gareth Ellis: Could extend his stay with Hull FC

Former Great Britain international Gareth Ellis has confirmed he has held talks with Hull FC regarding a contract extension with the Super League club.

The former Wests Tigers and Leeds Rhinos man still has 12 months to run on the three-year contract he signed in 2012, although he is not close to considering hanging up his boots.

Although the Airlie Birds have endured a below-par season to date which looks like them missing out on the playoffs, their captain is enjoying playing and wants to keep improving.

"I've had some small talks with the club about what I want to do, and they asked me what I wanted too," the 33-year-old told the Hull Daily Mail.

"Some people find it hard to believe after the season we have had, but I really enjoy the challenge of going out and playing. I'm looking forward to doing that for a few more years yet.

"I'm looking forward to finishing off this season with a bang and going into pre-season and coming back an improved player again next year."

Scope for improvement

Ellis feels calling time on international rugby league has prolonged his career and he sees no reason why he cannot return a better player in 2015 with a solid pre-season.

"I actually feel really good. I think last year retiring from England - as tough as it was - it benefitted me massively," he continued.

"I feel as though I had a good pre-season with the team and I feel I can rip into training in the off-season and come back a better player again.

"That's the incentive for me, to improve and be better. And if and when I feel I can't do that anymore, it's probably time to hang up my boots.

"But at the minute I feel great and I enjoy the game and look forward to playing every week. Even at 33 I still feel like there's more to come."
