Jose Maria Olazabal, Europe's victorious captain in 2012, is tipping Miguel Angel Jimenez to make the home side for the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in September.

Jimenez became the first 50-year-old to win on the European Tour on Sunday by taking the Spanish Open and will start as one of the form players at this week's PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Olazabal, delighted for his Spanish compatriot after his weekend win in Girona, told Sky Sports:"It means a lot to us.

"It's just amazing, his attitude especially on the golf course but also about life. He's 50 years old but he also has the spirit of a 20-year-old so it's wonderful to watch."

"It's obviously great for a player like Miguel at 50 winning so well. He keeps our hopes alive somehow, when I look at that there is a little flame still shining inside and it gets stronger when you see what he's doing.

Jimenez will hope to do well in Europe's flagship event and Olazabal, 48, revealed his close friend is keen to make Paul McGinley's team on merit.

Hopes

Olazabal said: "He told me last year that for this year his goal was to play in the team and what he has done in the last month or so in that regard is helping his hopes.

"Obviously he will have to continue to play like this but that's a goal that he's got for this year and I believe he has a great chance."

Meanwhile, Sky Sports golf expert Wayne Riley backed the changes to Wentworth's West Course, overseen by South African legend Ernie Els in 2011, ahead of this year's event.

He said: "I shot 63 round here in the first round of the PGA. It was a little too easy the golf course then.

"We were getting into the early 60s way back when, when Woods, Lyle, Ballesteros used to make fun of this golf course... Ernie Els in the Matchplay, they made so many birdies.

"Els has since come in and toughened it up and he's done a fine job."
