Jonathan Trott recorded his first century since returning to cricket on day three of Warwickshire's County Championship Division One clash against Sussex.

The 33-year-old reached three figures for the 34th time in his first-class career to help his side make 333 in reply to Sussex's first-innings total of 413 at Horsham.

Trott reached the landmark from 224 balls thanks to a four off England bowler Chris Jordan (2-94), only to depart soon after to bring about lunch. Steve Magoffin (4-74) dismissed him for 106, ending a knock that featured 14 boundaries.

"It's important to take one step at a time. At the moment I am just concentrating on playing for Warwickshire."

The 33-year-old came home from England's tour of Australia following the first Test in Brisbane due to a stress-related illness and took five months off from cricket.

Trott returned to action for Warwickshire at the start of the domestic season, facing Sussex at Edgbaston in April, but a repeat of his symptoms led to the right-hander taking a further break from the game.

The South Africa-born batsman turned out for the county's second team recently, including making an unbeaten 138 in June, before then appearing for the first team again in Championship fixtures against Nottinghamshire and Durham.

"It was good. It was important to spend some time in the middle," he said after making the century. "I felt pretty good at Durham last week so I just wanted to continue that and keep working and improving.

"I'm not sure that getting hundreds just to get them out of the way is the right way to phrase it. It's about going out there and being part of a team rather than just thinking about your own personal game. It's important that I maintain that mentality.

"It's important to take one step at a time. At the moment I am just concentrating on playing for Warwickshire."

Ed Joyce (72) and Craig Cachopa (54) shared a third-wicket stand of 109 as Sussex reached 204-4 in their second innings by the close, a lead of 284 going into the final day.
