Stuart Broad: taken to hospital

England fast bowler Stuart Broad has been taken to hospital for x-rays after being hit by a bouncer against India at Old Trafford.

Broad had just hit two successive sixes off Varun Aaron and when the India fast bowler dropped the next ball short the England star, going for the hat-trick of maximums, swung and missed.

The ball clattered into his helmet and broke through the grill. It ended up being lodged between Broad’s face and the remains of his grill and the Nottinghamshire man was soon on his knees spitting out blood.

He retired hurt and when England – with a first innings lead of 215 – came back out to bowl for India’s second innings after tea, Broad did not take the field.

Dressed in casual clothing, he emerged from the dressing room shortly after play resumed. Accompanied by officials, he walked around part of the boundary before heading out of the ground in the direction of the car park.

It was understood he was to be taken to hospital for an X-ray.

Somerset’s Craig Keiswetter suffered a broken nose and fractured cheekbone after being hit in almost identical fashion by a bouncer from Northants’ fast bowler David Willey earlier this month.
