Austrian skier Marcel Hirscher overcame a first-leg deficit to edge out German skier Felix Neureuther and win the World Cup slalom race for his 26th career victory.

World No 1 Hirscher trailed Neureuther by 00.25 seconds after Sunday morning's first run in Are, Sweden, but beat him by 00.10. Russian Alexander Khoroshilov finished 00.15 behind for a career-best third place.

The win completed a fine double for the Austrian as he came first in the giant slalom race on Saturday ahead of Ted Ligety of the United States.

Hirscher is one of only five Austrian men to have won 25 career races and moves level with Franz Klammer.

Ligety was third after the first run but lost control of his skis midway down the second after taking a turn too wide and failed to finish.

Third place went to Khoroshilov, the first Russian to mount a World Cup slalom podium in 33 years.

"Winning by just a tenth of a second means you cannot really say that I was better or not as good (as Neureuther)," Hirscher said.

"We all gave the maximum and it could just as well have been Felix that ended up the winner.

"It's suprising but also very good to see Alexander (Khoroshilov) do so well."
