Jari-Matti Latvala won four of Saturday's six stages to press title-chasing Sebastien Ogier in the Rally of Spain.

Ogier leads Latvala by 27.3 seconds going into the final day as Saturday's stages proved to be attritional for tyres and brakes in red-hot temperatures.

Latvala lost ground with a puncture on Friday but his attacking display on the mainly asphalt stages ensured victory will be up for grabs on Sunday.

Ogier's main scare, and time loss, came on the marathon Escaladei test over 50kms, as he drove the final 20kms with severe vibrations after a tyre delaminated.

“I have to congratulate Jari-Matti because he did a good job,” said Ogier on wrc.com.

“The plan was to control from the front but there were sections I didn’t control too much because I had to drive very fast to stay with him. He was flying, but my plan was to have a 20sec lead tonight and we have more than that so it’s good."

Latvala added: "I was disappointed yesterday. I wanted to fight for the win and now that seems a little too far away. I was driving too aggressively and thinking about today’s asphalt rather than the gravel."

Mikko Hirvonen sits in third place, one minute and 18 seconds off the pace, after overtaking Andreas Mikkelsen and Mads Ostberg in the battle for the final podium berth,

Mikkelsen spun before stopping to replace a damaged tyre - he dropped all the way down to seventh - while Ostberg fell back to fourth just ahead of Dani Sordo.
