Croatian teenager Borna Coric shocked second seed Rafa Nadal to reach the semi-finals of the ATP Swiss Indoors on Friday.

The 17-year-old wildcard backed up hugely-impressive wins over Ernests Gulbis and Andrey Golubev in the previous rounds with a 6-2 7-6 (7/4) victory against his boyhood hero after one hour and 40 minutes on court.

The defeat has brought to an end Nadal's season, with the nine-time French Open champion having already withdrawn from next week's Paris Masters with appendix surgery looming. The Spaniard confirmed after the match that he will go under the knife on November 3, ruling him out of the ATP Tour Finals in London.

"This is a huge surprise," said the world number 124 after the biggest win of his career to date.

"I couldn't believe I got to 5-0 in the first set against Nadal. I was scared he would start a comeback. But I stayed very calm and I played well."

Goffin through

Coric faces a last four clash with Belgium seventh seed David Goffin, who overcame fourth seed Milos Raonic 6-7 (3/7) 6-3 6-4 to progress.

Also through to the last four is Ivo Karlovic, with the eighth seed beating unseeded German Benjamin Becker 6-4 6-4.

Karlovic will face five-time champion Roger Federer, who beat fifth seed Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 (7/4) 6-2.

The home favourite and top seed, who has been runner-up the last two years, took the first set on the tie-break before breaking his opponent’s serve twice in the second set to complete the win in just under an hour-and-a-half.
