WTA Guangzhou International Women's Open: Samantha Stosur one of several seeds to fall

Samantha Stosur was stunned by home hope Yafan Wang at the Guangzhou International Women's Open, where only one of the eight seeds reached round two.

Chinese player Wang, who is ranked 251 in the world, came back from a set down to defeat the top seed and former US Open champion 2-6 6-2 6-2 in the first round.

Stosur served seven double faults and was broken on a total of four occasions during the contest, which lasted 2 hours 3 minutes.

Elsewhere in the first round, fifth seed Zarina Diyas was eliminated after being defeated 6-4 6-1 by Ling Zhang of Hong Kong.

The exodus of seeds continued when No 4 player Bojana Jovanovski fell to Monica Niculescu, who emerged as a comfortable 6-2 6-2 winner.

Silvia Soler Espinosa then clinched a 6-3 4-6 6-4 victory over third seed Sloane Stephens and another Chinese hope, Kai-Lin Zhang, defeated No 7 seed Jana Cepelova 6-1 6-4.

In total, seven of the eight seeds have been eliminated in the opening round. Only No 2 seed Alize Cornet escaped an upset having reached the second round on Monday.
