Chris Kirk carded a final-round five-under 66 to win the Deutsche Bank Championship by two shots and go top of the FedEx Cup standings.

The American had been two shots back at the start of play but compiled a second straight bogey-free round at TPC Boston to take victory on 15-under.

The win - the third of Kirk's PGA Tour career - lifted him from 17th place in the FedEx Cup race to first with two legs of the four-tournament play-off series remaining.

Billy Horschel had the chance to force a play-off after finding the fairway at the par five last but hit a shocking second into a hazard and made bogey to finish in a tie for second with Geoff Ogilvy and overnight leader Russell Henley.

Rory McIlroy's hopes of a final-day charge faltered and a one-under 70 left him in a tie for fifth with John Senden.

Kirk made his move with an outward 33 which featured birdies at the third, fourth and ninth - the American holing putts from five, eight and 11 feet.

A 23 foot putt for birdie at 13 took him to 14-under and he knocked in another at the 16th to take command.

He could have given himself real breathing space by holing a nine footer for a birdie four at 18 but, in the end, it didn't matter as Horschel's bid to tie went up in smoke.

McIlroy, who started the day just two shots back, birdied the fourth but lost momentum with back-to-back bogeys at the fifth and sixth.

The Northern Irishman, who won the final two majors of 2014, hit back with birdies at seven and eight but his difficult day continued with bogeys at 10 and 12. Two birdies in the final three holes elevated him to -11 and he remains in second place in the FedEx Cup standings.

The top 70 now advance to the next tournament - the BMW Championship which starts on Thursday - but it won't include Ian Poulter and Luke Donald, who will discover on Tuesday if they're among Paul McGinley's three wildcard picks.
