The Philadelphia Eagles secured their first pre-season win with a comprehensive 31-21 success against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Lincoln Financial Field.

They easily won the battle of first-team offenses and the Steelers only came back into the game late on once the regular starters had long since said their farewells.

Philadelphia took the lead 6:21 into the first quarter when Nick Foles connected with LeSean McCoy on a 22-yard touchdown pass.

McCoy gave the Eagles a brief scare when he left with a thumb injury after catching the touchdown pass, but X-rays were negative and coach Chip Kelly said it was 'no big deal' after the game.

Replacement running-back Darren Sproles rushed for a score early in the second and Alex Henery hit a 36-yard field goal to make it 17-0 at half-time.

Handing over

Foles completed 19-of-29 passes for 179 yards before leaving the game and handing over to Mark Sanchez and then Matt Barkley.

Matthew Tucker made it 24-0 with a one-yard score before Pittsburgh finally got on the scoreboard, Ben Roethlisberger finding tight-end Heath Miller for a 27-yard touchdown before coming out of the game deep into the third quarter.

Tucker restored Philadelphia's 24-point lead with another one-yard rumble - he ended up with 46 yards on 10 carries - but Pittsburgh managed a couple of fourth-quarter scores to give the scoreline a degree of respectability.

Bruce Gradkowski came off the bench to hook up with Darrius Heyward-Bey from 33 yards and Martavis Bryant from three yards, but those touchdowns came too late for the Steelers to ever threaten a comeback victory.

The Steelers used running backs LeGarrette Blount (seven runs for 32 yards) and LeVeon Bell (nine runs for 23 yards) despite both players having been arrested for marijuana possession on Wednesday.
