The formidable Washington Nationals stretched their winning run to nine games thanks to Anthony Rendon, who was supposed to be on a night off.

Handed a pinch-hitting role in the bottom of the ninth inning, Rendon singled home Bryce Harper for the walk-off run that secured a 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Team manager Matt Williams had reasoned that Rendon deserved a break following 62 consecutive games, and started with Kevin Frandsen at third base, but called on the 24-year-old after seeing the encounter in the balance.

Wednesday’s MLB results:

Red Sox 3 Angels 8
Cubs 3 Giants 8
White Sox 3 Orioles 4
Rockies 5 Royals 2
Dodgers 1 Padres 4
Marlins 4 Rangers 5
Brewers 5 Blue Jays 9
Twins 0 Indians 5
Yankees 2 Astros 5
Athletics 5 Mets 8
Phillies 4 Mariners 3
Pirates 3 Braves 2
Cardinals 7 Reds 3
Rays 0 Tigers 6
Nationals 3 Diamondbacks 2

"It's a little stressful," Rendon said, according to MLB’s official website. “I have some grey (in my hair) coming in now. But it's good to be on the winning side of these walk-offs. As long as we get a 'W,' it's a good time."

The Nationals are the runaway leaders of the National League East and just one win shy of tying their franchise record of consecutive wins.

Winning run halted

As one winning run continued, another was halted as the Milwaukee Brewers saw their five-game streak come to an end, beaten 9-5 by the Toronto Blue Jays for whom Jose Bautista cracked a three-run homer in the sixth.

NL West leaders the Los Angeles Dodgers were beaten 4-1 by the visiting San Diego Padres, while Nelson Cruz went to the top of the home run standings with a 33rd of his campaign to help the Baltimore Orioles achieve a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox.

A grand slam from Matt McBride in the sixth inning steered the Colorado Rockies to a 5-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals, who saw their lead at the top of the American League Central trimmed to one game after nearest rivals the Detroit Tigers trounced the Tampa Bay Rays 6-0. They too benefited from a grand slam, with Victor Martinez going deep off Kirby Yates in the seventh.

Elsewhere, the Texas Rangers edged the Miami Marlins 5-4, the Philadelphia Phillies were 4-3 winners against the Seattle Mariners, the Pittsburgh Pirates edged out the Atlanta Braves 3-2, and the Los Angeles Angels were brutal 8-3 victors in Boston against the Red Sox.

A three-run homer from Lucas Duda set up the New York Mets for an 8-5 success against the Oakland Athletics, while the Houston Astros beat the New York Yankees 5-2, the Cleveland Indians enjoyed a 5-0 win over the Minnesota Twins, the St Louis Cardinals saw off the Cincinnati Reds 7-3, and the Chicago Cubs suffered an 8-3 home loss to the San Francisco Giants.
