Captain Derek Jeter helped the New York Yankees end their five-game losing streak as his single in the ninth-inning secured a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Martin Prado's homer in the second had put the Yankees 2-0 ahead but the Rays fought back to level it up. However, Jeter batted in Brett Gardner to hand the visitors a much-needed win that was sealed thanks to David Robertson's 32nd save of the season.

Clayton Kershaw tasted defeat for the first time in 14 starts as the Los Angeles Dodgers also went down 3-2 against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Kershaw struck out 11 Brewers as he pitched a complete game for the 17th time in his career, but it was not enough as Carlos Gomez's sixth-inning homer proved to be the crucial score.

David Price pitched eight innings on his home debut for the Detroit Tigers in a 4-2 triumph over Seattle, in the process ending a five-game winning run for the Mariners.

J.D. Martinez and Nick Castellanos both recorded seventh-inning singles as the Tigers leapfrogged their opponents into a wildcard spot in the American League.

The San Francisco Giants came from 5-1 down to record a 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies while the Cleveland Indians were convincing 6-0 winners over the Baltimore Orioles.

The Washington Nationals claimed a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Miami Marlins edged another tight contest as they beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1.

The New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 7-3 while the other team in the windy city, the White Sox, also lost as they went down 6-3 to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Boston Red Sox were 10-7 winners against the Houston Astros, David Ortiz hitting a pair of two-run homers for the reigning world champions, and the Atlanta Braves claimed a 4-3 win over the Oakland Athletics.

In Saturday's other games, the St Louis Cardinals lost 9-5 to the San Diego Padres, the Los Angeles Angels beat the Texas Rangers 5-4 and the Minnesota Twins were 4-1 victors over the Kansas City Royals.
