The Milwaukee Brewers won the battle of Major League Baseball divisional leaders as they saw off the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-3 on Friday night.

The game was decided largely by an eventful seventh inning which saw the Dodgers' comeback go to waste.

Trailing 2-1, the Californian side went ahead with two runs - and in the process saw Yasiel Puig snap his bat despite pulling out of a swing - but two errors from Justin Turner, deputising for the injured Hanley Ramirez at shortstop, allowed Milwaukee to respond with four.

They added three more in the eighth for a victory which keeps the National League Central pace-setters 1.5 games clear of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who edged the San Diego Padres 2-1.

Friday’s MLB results:

Diamondbacks 5 Rockies 3
Braves 7 Nationals 6
Orioles 12 Cardinals 2
Cubs 3 Rays 4
Reds 1 Marlins 2
Astros 4 Rangers 3
Royals 4 Giants 2
Angels 2 Sox 4
Brewers 9 Dodgers 3
Yankees 10 Indians 6
Athletics 6 Twins 5
Phillies 4 Mets 5
Pirates 2 Padres 1
Mariners 4 Sox 1
Blue Jays 4 Detroit Tigers 5

The Dodgers remain 3.5 clear of San Francisco in the NL West after Billy Butler hit a two-run homer and an RBI single to lead the Kansas City Royals to victory over the Giants.

The Atlanta Braves beat the Washington Nationals 7-6 to close to 3.5 games behind their opponents in the NL East. Brothers Justin and BJ Upton were among four Braves to hit home runs, in the process setting the MLB record for siblings homering in the same game as they achieved the feat for a fifth time.

The Miami Marlins beat the Cincinnati Reds 2-1, the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4, the Arizona Diamondbacks saw off the Colorado Rockies 5-3 and the Chicago Cubs lost 4-3 to the Tampa Bay Rays.

In control

In the American League, the Oakland Athletics remained in control of the West after a nervy 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins.

Coco Crisp batted in three of the A's runs but they gave up five in the seventh inning to leave them facing a tense finish, Sean Doolittle earning the save.

The win lifted Oakland four games clear of the Los Angeles Angels, who lost 4-2 to the Boston Red Sox as Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run double in the third inning.

The Detroit Tigers kept themselves two games ahead of victorious Kansas with a 5-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays delivered by back-to-back homers from their number eight and nine batsmen Nick Castellanos and Eugenio Suarez.

The Baltimore Orioles lead the AL East after bombing six home runs in a 12-2 win over the St Louis Cardinals, a fitting way to celebrate their 60th anniversary.

JJ Hardy had two of those, with Manny Machado, Adam Jones, Chris Davis and Ryan Flaherty also going long.

The New York Yankees are a game ahead of Toronto but still five behind Baltimore after beating the Cleveland Indians 10-6, Carlos Beltran's grand slam swinging the game New York's way.

The Chicago White Sox lost 4-1 to the Seattle Mariners while the Houston Texans beat state rivals the Texas Rangers 4-3.
